Founded in 2019, EMERGENCE: Research & Performance Topics in Black Music is the scholarly publication of the National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc. (NANM).  Its purpose is to offer research, commentary, and insight on matters related to Black music in areas of performance, composition, special topics, and education. Articles will be anonymously peer-reviewed by a review board composed of acclaimed and accomplished pedagogues and performers of national and international acclaim.

Submissions to EMERGENCE will be welcomed by members and non-members of NANM. Released in July of each year, each publication will include up to two articles on each major content area (performance, composition, special topics, and education), editorials from members of the advisory board, a spotlight on a major figure in Black music and reviews of performance or literature related to the Black experience.
