Assistant Professor of the Practice - Piano (Brown University)

The Department of Music at Brown University seeks a full-time Assistant Professor of the Practice to direct our Applied Music Keyboard Program. We seek a dynamic pianist who can teach individual lessons (including very advanced performers) and coordinate the AMP Keyboard program, which involves organizing auditions and recitals, assigning students to instructors, overseeing juries and grading, and planning masterclasses. The director organizes two department-wide student concerts a year, connects piano students to work collaboratively with other musicians, takes part in student advising, attends faculty meetings, helps to coordinate the maintenance of Brown’s fleet of pianos, and evaluates supplements submitted by prospective undergraduates for consideration for admission. In addition, the director teaches one course per semester, which could be in performance, music theory, keyboard labs, musicianship, ethno/musicology, composition, electronic music, or studio production.

Qualifications Qualified applicants will have an advanced degree (MA, MM, MFA, DMA, or PhD) in Music or equivalent experience, and a record of accomplishments as a performer, teacher, and administrator. Candidates with at least two years of teaching experience at a university, college, or conservatory will be strongly preferred. Applicants should explain in a cover letter what their creative and intellectual work will bring to Brown. A commitment to the goals of Brown’s diversity and inclusion action plan is essential. The initial appointment is for 3 years, and can be renewed following an evaluation based on the quality of teaching, service, and creative work.

Application Instructions Please apply for the position through Interfolio. Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of their approach and commitment to diversity and inclusion (which can touch on teaching, performance, service, etc.), 2-3 samples of recent performances (videos or recordings), and a 200-500-word proposal for a course of the applicant’s choosing. Letters of recommendation will be solicited later in the search process. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled, but best consideration will be given to materials submitted by February 24, 2022. This position is scheduled to start July 2022.
