Qualifications: The MIT Music and Theater Arts Section performance program is seeking a full-time Lecturer 1 to teach piano and chamber music in the classical and contemporary concert tradition. The rank of Lecturer I holds an initial appointment of three years, with potential for a two-year reappointment, followed by promotion to Lecturer II and subsequent renewals at that rank. Masters degree or equivalent. The qualified candidate has at least two years of experience teaching and coaching musicians at the university or conservatory level, including pianists, string and wind players, and singers. Experienced performing artist with an established and/or growing reputation as a solo or chamber musician.
Duties: Teach individualized piano lessons for, and assist in coordination of, MIT’s Emerson/Harris Program for Private Study, which offers merit-based financial grants for private lesson study in music to MIT students of outstanding achievement on their instruments or voice in classical, jazz, or world music; coach and assist in coordinating ensembles for MIT’s Chamber Music Society, comprised of students selected by audition to study and perform classical chamber music repertoire.
The successful candidate may also be asked to teach collaborative piano, lead performance seminars, teach other subjects in the existing curriculum, or develop new subject offerings in their area(s) of expertise and interest. The teaching load for this position is six subjects per academic year. The position demands dynamic and innovative teaching, and entails substantive engagement with students on a regular basis during MIT’s nine-month academic year.
