Assistant Director of Bands (Elon University)


Elon University invites applications for a nine-month, full-time, lecturer track, Assistant Director of Bands beginning July 2023. Masters is required, and completed Ph.D. or DMA in Wind Conducting, Music Education, or related field is preferred. This position requires someone who brings a broadly integrated and interdisciplinary perspective to instrumental music; who can demonstrate a record of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or secondary level; who can demonstrate experience with concert bands, athletic bands, music education, recruitment, and research; and who can show evidence of drill writing and arranging for marching band, planning band festivals/contests, traveling with ensembles, budgetary management, inventory control, etc., and communicating the value of band performance to students considering a range of career paths.


The successful candidate will demonstrate performance expertise as a conductor of wind groups including Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Pep Band. Teaching will include ensemble directing and courses in Elon’s Core Curriculum program, and may include courses in general music, music education, wind or percussion methods, or applied lessons depending upon the candidate’s expertise. Candidates who have experience working with a diverse range of people, and who can contribute to the climate of inclusivity are encouraged to identify their experiences in their cover letter.
